Taharah 2- Manners of the Toilet!!

Bismillahir  rahman  nir  rahim
Taharah
Assalamu alaikum wa rahamatullahi wa barakatahu J

This post will contain transcripts from 2 lectures: Issues related to water(contd.) and Manners related to Toilet.
The foremost thing to remember and do is to read the du’a of entering the bathroom.
“Narrated Anas bin Malik: Whenever the Prophet went to the lavatory, he used to say: "Allahumma Inni a'udhu bika mina-lkhubthi Wal khaba'ith."  (Book #75, Hadith #334)”
In the olden days, people didn’t have closed bathrooms; hence this du’a was necessary as, people would go to faraway places to attend to their needs. And Jinns live in such places. Now, as most of us know, that shayateen and such jinns like to live in filth and places which are “najas”. Hence the chances of being attacked by these evil beings increased in such places. This du’a helped a person protect him/her self from such.
Even though we do have closed areas, but we are also prone to be attacked as we are naked and attending to these matters of the toilet. So we should always pray this du’a before entering the toilet.
[ we can paste it on the bathroom door, to make it easy for all members of the family to recite and memorise it and also to make it a habit and  this works!!]
The du’a for leaving the bathroom is “ghufranaka”( ya Allah, forgive me)
We cannot take Allah’s name in the bathroom; hence the du’a should be made before entering.
The Prophet s.a.w used to take off his ring, which had “muhammed messenger of Allah” (s.a.w) inscribed on it. [ ibn majah and tirmizi]
Hence any lockets, any “Taweez” with Allah’s name should be taken off before entering the bathroom.
If we are answering the call of nature (doing toilet) in an open space( like a jungle or such) then care should be taken that  face and back should not be towards the Qibla. [Muslim]
Generally, bathrooms in Islamic buildings are built with this in mind.
If in an enclosed space (bathroom) then, back can be towards the Qibla but not the face.
[Bukhari Bk 5 #150 and Muslim Bk 2 #0510]
So, any Muslim getting his /her house built, please take this point in consideration and get your bathroom built accordingly!!
We cannot take care of this point, in bathrooms built at all places. So don’t worry, Allah knows!! Attend to your need and Allah will forgive us , as we cannot do anything about it. BUT, if we are in an open space, on the road side attending to the needs of our children or ourselves, getting bathrooms built in our new homes, we SHOULD take care of this point and save our selves from the hell fire!!
We, should not blow air into the bowl that we are drinking any liquid from [Muslim]
Left hand should be used to clean nose
Right hand should be used to comb hair and etc and we should try to start brushing our teeth, combing our hair, wearing our shoes, wearing our clothes, etc from the right side. [ Muslim Bk 2 #514, #515]
This made me think, why..??whats the hikmat/wisdom behind it? and the answer is, that when we consciously do these things, then we are remembering Allah and increasing His fear and His love in our hearts automatically and very easily fighting the shaitan!! So maybe , in the beginning these might sound a little “too much “ to do and you might forget them, but not to worry…Inshallah you will make it habit soon!!
A person should not attend to his/ or his children need to answer the call of nature ( do toilet) on the road, and places where people rest ( under trees etc) the word used is “ places of shadows”.
The wisdom behind this is that we shouldn’t make trouble for people. The road will smell bad and difficult to walk through; the places of rest would become unusable and hence trouble travelers and people in need.
If there is no water to be found, then a person can use sand ( 3 fistfuls/“muthi”)or stones.
Bone and cow dung should not be used. Its “najas” ..”filth”
A boy used to carry a pot of water for the Prophet s.a.w when he used to go to answer the call of nature( go for toilet)
[Bukhari Bk 4 #152/3/7]
This shows a kind of training that we as parents and elders  give to our children to take care of the elders,
We should teach our children to do small deeds, actions like this (and opening the door, letting an elder sit where we were sitting if less space, carrying their things if we are shopping together etc)
Even if WE are not on good terms with a certain person, we should not stop our child from doing things for that person.
Your child is not silly to be doing things around, when all the rest of the children are sitting and not helping. Your child is luckier than the rest as he/she is gaining more sawab and making his Akhirat better!!While the rest are...:)
The prophet s.a.w used to carry an “anza” a small spear when he used to go for Toilet purposes.
[Bukhari Bk 4 #154]
This spear can be used for 3 things:
1.to dig the ground where one intends to do the necessary. This makes the ground  soft and will absorb the filth easily and also the sand we dug up can be used to cover up the “najas”
2.as a protection against animals
3 . to put a curtain infront of us while we do the necessary.
If we feel an urgency to use the toilet and its time to pray , then its necessary to use the toilet first and then pray.  Even , if the jammat for salah has started, finish the toilet and then join in the salah. [Sunan  Abu Dawud 1 #0090191.]
Otherwise, our concentration in namaaz /salah will not be proper.
It is necessary to “hide” oneself behind a curtain/ veil to attend to the toilet purposes.
The point is that we should try to “screen “ ourselves while attending to toilet purposes.
The  vessel for wu’zu and washing one’s private parts after the call of nature( istinja) should be separate.
Reciting the kalimah while washing  hands (after washing up the private parts) to make them “paak” is NOT proved by sunnah.
We should not speak while attending to toilet matters.
A man passed by the Prophet s.a.w once and said salam while he was answering the call of nature, but the Prophet s.a.w didn’t reply. [Muslim]
It is not necessary to do wu’zu  every time after attending to the toilet.
It’s a sunnah to wash hands with soap (or sand) after washing ones’s private parts.[Bukhari]
Subhanallah!!  So many muslims wash hands after washing up!! Our mothers taught it to us and we teach it to our kids. If we could just make the niyat for this small and inconsequential task to Please Allah and follow the Sunnah of the Prophet s.a.w, then we get so much Sawab for such a small thing!!
One should wash one’s private parts with the left hand only.
One should not stand and answer the call of nature.
One should not answer the call of nature in standing water.
Once the prophet s.a.w was passing by a colony with a companion and he answered the call of nature standing, behind a wall. He asked his companion to come closer and screen him from the people passing by. He stood up and answered the call of nature, as he was hurt in his leg.[ Bukhari]
In sickness and old age and cold one can use a vessel to urinate in .[ Abu Dawud 1 # 0024]

This is it for now..inshallah as I go along I will post more. If you have any doubts please do go ahead and get them cleared. As Taharah is 50% of our Imaan and we should not be lagging behind in this.
